The Ultimate Summer Activities Guide to Lake Geneva

Lake Geneva earned its nickname — the Newport of the West — during the Gilded Age, when Chicago’s wealthiest families made it their summer retreat. They were onto something.
The combination of a stunning, crystal-clear lake, a walkable downtown, and a full season’s worth of things to do makes Lake Geneva one of the Midwest’s best summer destinations.
Whether you have a single afternoon or a full weekend, here is everything worth doing when the weather is warm.
On the Water
The lake is the reason. Everything else is a bonus.
The single best way to experience Geneva Lake is from the water. Pierless Rentals makes it easy to get out on the lake for a half or full day. Pontoons are perfect for groups who want to cruise, anchor in a cove, and spend the afternoon floating. No boating experience required. Book in advance on summer weekends, they fill up.
For something more active than a boat day, Clear Water Outdoor rents kayaks and stand-up paddleboards right on Geneva Lake. You can paddle along the shoreline, get close to the historic estates, and cover ground at your own pace. Great for couples and small groups. No experience needed.
The classic Lake Geneva experience. Cruise Lines runs several tour options: the iconic U.S. Mail Boat Tour where brave crew members literally jump off the moving boat to deliver mail to lakeside estates, the cocktail cruise for golden hour on the water, the Jazz Dinner Cruise for a special evening, and the Best of the Lake sightseeing tour. The mailboat tour is a genuine Lake Geneva original and worth doing at least once.
Street-legal golf carts are one of the most fun ways to explore Lake Geneva. Cruise downtown, loop around to the lakefront, and cover more ground than you would on foot. Use code LPP5 for a discount. Great for groups who want to explore without committing to a full driving itinerary.
Local Tip: The U.S. Mail Boat Tour books out in advance during peak summer weeks. Reserve tickets online at cruiselakegeneva.com before your trip.
Beaches & Swimming
The main public beach in downtown Lake Geneva with lifeguards, sandy shoreline, and docks. Open daily 9am to 5pm from Memorial Day through Labor Day. $10 per person. Arrive early on peak summer weekends.
The largest public beach on Geneva Lake and the local favorite. Wide sandy area, volleyball courts, picnic tables, and lifeguards. On the west end of the lake in Fontana. Lifeguards on duty 9:30am to 6pm daily in season.
A quieter, tree-shaded beach on the north side of the lake. Great for families with young kids thanks to calm, shallow water and floating depth markers. Free parking nearby.
900 feet of sandy swimming beach plus hiking trails, picnic areas, and room to breathe. Requires a state park vehicle sticker or day pass. Pet friendly. The best option if you want beach plus nature.
🌳 Outdoor Activities
A 21 to 26-mile public walking trail around the entire perimeter of Geneva Lake, passing directly through the historic lakefront estates. Free and open daily during daylight hours. You don’t need to do the whole thing: a one to two-mile stretch from downtown is one of the best easy walks anywhere in Wisconsin. Dogs welcome on a leash.
A 100-acre outdoor adventure park with a 9-line zipline tour, a high ropes course, a climbing tower, and mountain biking trails. Great for families, groups, and anyone who wants some adrenaline with their summer trip. Reservations recommended.
A stunning Victorian summer estate built in 1888 by Chicago beer baron Conrad Seipp, accessible only by boat. Tours run May through October. Arriving on the water, as visitors did over 100 years ago, is part of the experience. One of the most genuinely special historic sites in the area.
A 170-acre nature preserve in Williams Bay with trails through wetlands, prairies, and forest. Free to visit. A peaceful, uncrowded alternative to the more active lakeside options.
Wild 3L Ranch offers guided trail rides through Kettle Moraine State Forest about 30 minutes from Lake Geneva. A memorable add-on for families or groups who want something different.
Food and Drink Worth Planning Around
Popeye’s on Lake Geneva is a downtown institution with a large outdoor patio directly across from the Riviera building. Rotisserie chicken, ribs, fish fry, and great summer energy. No reservations accepted, so arrive early or expect a wait on peak days. Worth it!
Lake City Social runs happy hour Monday through Friday 2pm to 6pm and all day Sunday with drink specials and $4 off appetizers. Mars Resort offers the supper club version on Lake Como, with live piano and an outdoor bar on the beach. Both are summer institutions.
Small-producer wines, craft beers, and thoughtful cocktails in a low-key downtown setting. Great for a pre-dinner drink or an afternoon of easy sipping. The retail side means you can also pick up a bottle to take home.
A waterfront restaurant designed to feel like the inside of a luxury yacht. Some of the best views of the lake from a dining room, especially on a clear summer evening. Strong seafood program, open-hearth fireplace, and beach chairs by the water after dinner.
For groups staying in a vacation rental, bringing dinner to you is often the best move. Elena Catering’s Chef Abel Rosas offers private chef experiences tailored to your group and occasion. Restaurant-quality meals in the privacy of your rental, no reservation hassle required.
When the Weather Doesn’t Cooperate
Summer in Wisconsin means the occasional rainy afternoon. Here’s how to fill it well.
A fully restored historic theatre in downtown Lake Geneva hosting professional magic shows year-round. Consistently rated one of the top attractions in town. Book tickets in advance.
An escape room experience in downtown Lake Geneva with multiple themed rooms for groups of 2 to 10. Fun for mixed-age groups, bachelorette parties, and anyone who wants a challenge.
A rainy afternoon is a great excuse to slow down on Main Street and Broad Street. Cornerstone Shop and Gallery, Edie Boutique, Dust Bunny Books, Don Vito’s Infused Olive Oil, and dozens of other shops make for a genuinely enjoyable afternoon even without the lake.
A historic astronomical observatory on the north shore of Geneva Lake now offering tours, programming, and events to the public. One of the most unique attractions in the area and worth a stop for anyone curious about science and history.
