Watch World Class Artists Transform Snow Into Art This January 28 Through February 1

Winter in Wisconsin just got a whole lot more exciting. Lake Geneva Winterfest is returning for its 31st year, bringing with it the most talented snow sculptors in the country for an epic competition that transforms downtown into a winter wonderland.

From January 28 through February 1, 2026, Lake Geneva plays host to America's Snow Sculpting Invitational, a prestigious championship that attracts award winning teams from across the United States. And here's the best part: it's completely FREE to attend!

What Is Winterfest?

Imagine walking through downtown Lake Geneva and encountering massive, intricate sculptures carved entirely from snow. Not simple snowmen, mind you, but legitimate works of art that rival museum quality pieces. That's Winterfest.

This annual celebration brings together professional snow sculpting teams for a 72 hour competition where they'll transform enormous blocks of snow into breathtaking sculptures along the beautiful shore of Geneva Lake. Teams will work at Riviera Plaza and Flat Iron Park, racing against the clock to complete their masterpieces before the Saturday afternoon deadline.

What makes this event truly special:

❄️ America's Snow Sculpting Invitational The competition welcomes back past champions and the most talented teams in the country for an epic showcase of skill and artistry

🎨 Watch Artists at Work See teams sculpting throughout the competition (Wednesday through Saturday morning)

🆓 Completely Free No admission fees to watch the competition or view the finished sculptures

🏆 Championship Level Competition This is the real deal, featuring professional sculptors creating remarkable, larger than life snow sculptures

🌊 Stunning Lakefront Location Sculptures are displayed along the gorgeous Geneva Lake shoreline

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Family Friendly Perfect for all ages with accessible parking, wheelchair accessible viewing, and service animals welcome

The Competition Schedule

Here's how Winterfest unfolds:

Wednesday, January 28: Competition Begins Teams arrive at Riviera Plaza and Flat Iron Park to begin their work. The snow blocks are massive, and watching the transformation begin is fascinating. Stop by throughout the day to see the early stages of these incredible sculptures.

Thursday, January 29 & Friday, January 30: Sculpting Continues The competition is in full swing! This is your chance to watch professional sculptors at work, see their techniques, and witness the progression from giant snow block to detailed artwork. It's mesmerizing to see how quickly these pieces take shape.

Saturday, January 31: Tools Down & Judging The competition concludes at 11am when teams must put their tools down. This is when you'll see the completed sculptures in all their glory. The judging happens, and winners are announced!

Sunday, February 1 (or until they melt!): Final Viewing Day Sculptures remain on display through Sunday, giving you one more chance to see these incredible works of art before they return to Mother Nature.

Beyond the Snow Sculptures

Winterfest isn't just about the snow sculpting competition (though that's certainly the main attraction). The entire weekend is packed with winter activities and entertainment:

🧊 Downtown Ice Sculpture Walk Stroll through downtown Lake Geneva and discover ice sculptures throughout the area. It's like an outdoor art gallery, but frozen!

🔥 Bonfires on the Beach Stay warm lakeside! Friday evening (January 30) from 4pm to 8pm, gather around beach bonfires at Riviera Beach. Concessions will be available for purchase, making it the perfect spot to warm up and enjoy the winter atmosphere.

🎭 Fox Valley Fire Art Performances Friday night gets even more exciting with live fire art performances at 5:30pm and 6:30pm at Riviera Beach. It's a spectacular show you won't want to miss!

🍎 Pearce's Farm Stand Concessions Warm up with hot drinks and snacks! Friday from 12pm to 6pm on Wrigley Drive.

🎵 Live Entertainment Throughout the weekend, enjoy various entertainment options that make Winterfest feel like a true celebration.

Why Winterfest Matters

In its 31st year, Lake Geneva Winterfest has become more than just an event. It's a celebration of winter, artistry, and community. While many people hibernate during the cold months, Winterfest gives us a reason to embrace the season and appreciate the beauty that can be created from snow and ice.

For the artists, it's a chance to showcase their incredible skills in a prestigious competition. For visitors, it's an opportunity to see world class art in a uniquely accessible format. Where else can you watch championship level artists create museum worthy pieces right before your eyes, completely free of charge?

The sculptures themselves are temporary, which makes them even more special. You're witnessing art that will only exist for a few days before melting back into water. There's something poetic about that, something that makes each viewing feel precious.

Perfect for Families, Couples, and Everyone

Whether you're planning a romantic winter getaway, a fun family outing, or a weekend with friends, Winterfest delivers.

For Families: Kids are absolutely mesmerized watching the sculptors work and seeing the finished pieces. It's educational, inspiring, and makes for incredible family memories. The accessible, free nature of the event means you can come and go as needed without worrying about ticket prices.

For Couples: There's something undeniably romantic about walking hand in hand through a winter wonderland, warming up by beach bonfires, and watching fire performances under the winter sky. Pair Winterfest with dinner at one of Lake Geneva's excellent restaurants for an unforgettable date weekend.

For Art Lovers: This is your chance to see professional sculptors create championship caliber work from start to finish. The skill, creativity, and artistry on display is truly remarkable.

For Photography Enthusiasts: The sculptures, ice art, lakefront setting, and winter atmosphere create endless photo opportunities. Golden hour shots with the sculptures and lake in the background are absolutely stunning.
